As an adolescent, I watched older people carry on intense discussions with themselves, and it always struck me as odd. I had no idea it was because, as people age, they realize they are the only ones who truly understand what they are saying and/or are the only ones who will actually bother to listen. So if no one is within earshot, who cares? It doesn't matter. Just keep talking.
I assumed the phenomenon was a condition you somehow "caught," but could probably avoid, if you were careful enough. These days I know better. As I was saying to myself only yesterday, age sneaks up on you and twists everything around before you realize you’ve been had.
